PEOPLE AMAZE ME

Today I was in one of those moods. The type of mood where you just cry and cry over every little thing, but really have no clue why you are crying. I didn't really ever shed a tear, but I cried mentally. Emotionally I sobbed for most of the day.

The other evening I went to Olive Garden to pick up some food. A man walked in, dressed in jeans and a T-Shirt holding a Wendy's drink cup. He asked very politely for a cup of water.

Let's stop for a moment. We will call them Waitress 1 & Waitress 2 for the sake of my story.

Waitress 1, the one that he directly asked obliged his request and proceeded to fill his cup with water. Waitress 2, the other one that was there gave him the kind of attitude that makes certain people have what I like to call "Ally McBeal" moments. You know when you visualize taking that snotty little twit and grabbing her by the nape of her hair, then dragging her across the dirty, greasy floor, and making her apologize as if her life depended on it for being so rude to this man. Deep Breaths.....In & Out....In & Out....

This type of situation may effect others differently. Back to the story. The man picked up on her attitude and said very calmly, " I apologize, but I am working around the corner and where I am working, there is no water." waitress 2 continued as if he weren't even there. Then, the moment he left she belted to the other waitress.

"That was the second time he came in here today asking for water!" " Most people who do hard manual labor bring water with them if they know where they are working will not have any."

waitress 1 replied :
"Your evil."

Waitress 2 came back with:
"Yeah, maybe so, but he is not one of our customers and there is water at the gas station."

I was completely infuriated with how this individual reacted to the situation. Of course with my observing passive nature I kept my mouth shut and simply enjoyed my "Ally McBeal" moment. During that time in my fantasy world, waitress 2 was getting plenty of let's call it good old Southern Hospitality.

I just can not believe how she treated him. The funny thing about it is she didn't even say anything directly to him. Just by her nasty disapproving body language and eye roll he as well as myself picked up on it. In her defense, maybe she was having a bad day. Maybe her dog just died, or her car ran out of gas. There honestly could be a thousand reasons to place excuse for her behavior, and that is exactly what I find so saddening. What if this man could not afford a bottle of water, maybe he had a hard day. Nobody ever tries to place themselves in others shoes. Everyone is so quick to judge someone's life, situation, looks, smells, etc.

Where has COMPASSION gone? Are we so lost in this world that we refuse to give a cup of water to other living, breathing souls. Just as you are, I am. A living, breathing, human soul.
